are very similar in many ways. They originated in different
parts of Wales
and have some different ancestors. The Cardigan is the larger of
the two
breeds by about 5 - 8 pounds; has a coat more like a German shepherd,

Right now I'm listening to the two cardi
clowns in the backyard. They re wrestling and fighting and chasing
and
tackling each other.
The really difference I
notice is the personality.
Yes, physically they are different. But when you are around them both
you
don't notice it as much. The cardis are clowns. That is my
husband's
description of them. They are never serious. The pem on the
other hand is a
little snobby. Prefers her own kind, slightly terrier in
nature-stubborn
and, oh, as my mom calls our Addie -the princess. I really like
both
personalities, but for me I prefer my pembroke. Maybe because she
is very
attached to me, will do anything for me(usually), and is very protective
of
me. Granted the cardi's are very protective of my son, who shows
them, and
the female is a very good watch dog, they are a little more laid back
when it
comes to meeting new people. Somewhat skeptical of strangers.
My husband
just chimed in that it's like looking at a business professions vs
clowns.
As far as training I am finding that the pems take to it a little
faster, but
they both are just as smart. Herding is a different story. The
pem is very
serious and good-instinct driven. The male cardi-Fred, is like a
border
collie, quiet, sure about his movements and low key. The female
cardi-Phoebe, is noisy, a head herder and very quick in her movements.

My
two oldest children are in 4-H and do classes with a gal in the Iowa
City
area once a week during the summer.
All corgis shed, buckets, twice a year. The females either
before or after
their heat cycle and the males in the spring and late summer. If
you are a
clean freak, don't get a corgi. Unlike my husband's lab, they
don't get
musky, but then again Fred likes the water so much he's always wet.
The
girls think he's nuts. Being low slung, they are attracted to mud,
mud
puddles and lots of dirt. The only real health problem that both
can face is
being over weight, which can lead to hip, back and elbow problems.
They
really enjoy food and with those faces it's hard to not give in. Will
power
is a must! Pems need to stay with in 25 lbs for females, 28 lbs
for males.
Cardis-29-20 lbs for females, 32 -35 lbs for males. It's sad to
see an
overweight corgi!

Cardigans are calmer and pems are hotter in temperament. Shedding is
about
the same in both breeds, males less, bitches more, but pems have
generally
more hair, so there is more to loose. Corgi is very good to train,
intelligent, has will to serve and is happy to do his best to his
beloved
people. I would recommend puppy classes for new dog owner ( with
first
corgi), if helps for socializing the dog and gives great tips for the
owner.
Corgi can be trained well to the highest level in obedience. Corgi don't
smell more than any dog, and normal care taking of coat and washes is
enough.
